Malaysia Bottled Water Industry
Malaysia Bottled Water Industry is charting a course for continued expansion, even in the face of evolving water supply dynamics. CRI’s latest research reveals that Malaysia, known for its abundant water resources, is witnessing significant growth in its bottled water consumption.
Malaysia has traditionally been rich in water resources, mainly sourced from surface water (80.8%), including rivers and dams (17.9%). However, recent shifts have moved the country from relative water abundance to scarcity, driven by factors like population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and increased agriculture, all of which exert pressure on water resources and contribute to heightened water pollution.
Remarkably, Malaysians have embraced bottled water, with per capita consumption approaching 150 liters annually, marking one of the highest rates among developing nations. Convenience, health considerations, and sometimes, a lack of trust in municipal tap water quality, have propelled this trend.
Malaysia’s robust economy, with an impressive 8.7% growth in 2022, supports its bottled water consumption. The country, with a population of nearly 32.7 million and a GDP per capita of $12,400, falls into the upper-middle-income category. As consumption and international trade remain pillars of Malaysia’s GDP, the nation saw total exports and imports surpass RM2.85 trillion (approximately $627 billion) in 2022, a second consecutive year of exceeding the 2 trillion-ringgit threshold.
CRI’s analysis of annual bottled water sales revenue in Malaysia from 2018 to 2022 reveals fluctuations, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 0.03%. The market faced a downturn in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with sales plummeting by 10.25%. However, subsequent years, 2021 and 2022, saw a gradual recovery, with sales revenue reaching approximately $300 million in 2022. With the pandemic’s economic impacts waning and increasing health consciousness and income levels, Malaysia’s bottled water industry is poised for sustained growth.
CRI predicts that by 2032, Malaysia’s bottled water market will expand to a size of US$522 million, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of approximately 5.7% from 2023 to 2032.
