China’s Germanium Exports: A Double-Edged Sword for the Global Economy

Posted by

Germanium is a rare earth metal with a wide range of applications in the electronics industry, including fiber optic systems, infrared optics, catalysts for polymerization reactions, and solar cells. China is the world’s largest producer of germanium, accounting for over 80% of global supply.

China’s Germanium Exports

In recent years, China has imposed export restrictions on a number of rare earth metals, including germanium. This has raised concerns among other countries, particularly those that rely on China for their germanium supplies.

According to the CRI Report on China’s Germanium Resources Export, China’s germanium exports have been on the rise in recent years, reaching 94 metric tonnes in 2022. However, the country’s export restrictions have made it more difficult for other countries to obtain germanium.

The CRI Report also found that China’s germanium reserves are estimated to be around 200,000 tonnes, the largest in the world. China’s germanium production is also the largest in the world, at around 100 tonnes per year.

The CRI Report also found that China’s germanium exports are primarily to the United States, Japan, and South Korea. These countries are heavily reliant on China for their germanium supplies.

China’s export restrictions on germanium have had a number of negative consequences for other countries. These consequences include:

  • Increased prices for germanium
  • Reduced availability of germanium
  • Increased uncertainty in the germanium market

A number of countries are taking steps to reduce their reliance on China for germanium. For example, the United States is investing in domestic germanium production and is also working to develop substitutes for germanium.

It is unclear how long China’s export restrictions on germanium will remain in place. However, it is clear that these restrictions are having a significant impact on the global germanium market.

The CRI Report on China’s Germanium Resources Export is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about this important topic. The report provides comprehensive data and analysis on China’s germanium resources, production, and exports.
